Revelation

When my partner had a psychotic episode last month (didn't know he had schizophrenia), he told me he'd murdered his mum. I looked into it & it's true. It was many years ago, his schizophrenia was undiagnosed and he was a daily cannabis user. In the lead up to his recent episode he'd been a heavy cannabis user for around 5 months & he threatened to murder me. I was outside at the time & went home (l live across the road from him). He remembers telling me about his mum & now says he did it in self-defence (yeah right). He's been an involuntary patient for over four weeks & is saying I betrayed him for calling the CAT team, that he didn't need help. He also said he didn't give the doctors permission to access his forensic history (he did). Plus many other lies. I want to tell him to stop with his lies. What should I do?

Re: Revelation

That sounds really hard. I feel for you.  I think your safety is paramount. Whether related to mental illness or not, violence is not ok. There are some high risk factors that cause enough risk for you that it could be worth talking to a GOOD counsellor that specialises in risk assessment and safety planning. 1800RESPECT is a good place to start. If you call and get someone that's not helpful, hang up and call again until you talk to someone who gets it. I hope things get better.

Re: Revelation

Hi Revelation, I think you're being very lenient.  Most people would have called the police.  If you have hard evidence, I think that's what you should do, before your next.

Re: Revelation

Had your partner gone through the justice system and been charged with manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility?  What do you actually know about that process, the correctional facility where he was detained, the length of time and how he was treated/stigmatized whilst detained.

He cannot stop 'with the lies' because they are intrinsic to protecting his being from the horror of knowing that he was responsible for the death of his mother.

You are out of your depth @Rilke
