Helpful resources for depression

I know that the guidelines here stop us from sharing specific locations of meeting places.

But can anyone recommend any resources that you have found helpful? I’m more thinking of places or people I can talk to.

Re: Helpful resources for depression

Hey @DGoldman,

Great idea to find some helpful resources! You have mentioned wanting to speak to someone - so in terms of resources were you maybe looking for some helplines? Helplines can also help to refer you to services like support groups etc?

Here are a few good ones that we know of:

Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Crisis Chat

beyondblue: 1300 22 4636 or online chat

Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or online counselling

Samaritans: 135 247

SANE Australia: 1800 187 263 or online chat

Otherwise were you wanting some useful resources to read perhaps?

Re: Helpful resources for depression

Hi @DGoldman

GPs can be a great place to ask about local places you can talk with someone or a group about depression.

Also if you see a psychologist, they often know about local support groups and group therapy groups running which are based around depression and living with it or supporting someone with it. Some psychologists run group therapy for people living with or supporting people with depression. And they do individual therapy too, so you can work with them both one to one and within a group.

There are lots of places like these forums, online, where you can chat in writing about depression.

There are Facebook and Google+ groups where people talk about depression in writing- just be mindful some of these can be really useful but not all of them will be contained as safely as these forums are. It's important to stick with safely contained groups to not feed off somoeone else's depression and end up feeling worse.

There are also many Day Programs of groups in person including ones dealing with depression if you have private hospital cover (not private health cover- they are two separate things). Your GP refers you to a private hospital for an admission or to a private psychiatrist (who can cost a lot even if you have private hospital cover) who admits to a private psych hospital. Then that private psychiatrist refers you to a Day Program which runs groups focused on supporting people with living well with mental health issues and on healing. Day Programs usually run Monday through Friday and depending on your need and availability you can go to one day a week or more than that. There are usually groups which deal with many aspects of depression and living with depression in these Day Programs. Day Programs are generally free once you pay for private hospital cover. Hospitalisations and private psychiatrist appointments can be out of pocket partly with the private hospital cover which allows you to do Day Programs.

Best place to start is your GP.

There are also groups like GROW which can support people living with depression and other mental health issues, and people supporting someone with depression or other mental health issues.

Hoping you find what suits you best.
